Chuck & Barbara have served in Indonesia since 1981. Since 1995 they have been loaned to work with local Timorese churches and a Christian University on Timor, where they are involved in an exciting partnership training and coaching Timorese Christians in Bible translation. Enthusiasm for the scriptures has spread, so the Grimes are now involved with translation teams from over 20 languages, with requests from several additional language communities. The Timorese churches (in both West Timor and East Timor) are solidly behind these translations. Because of the unstable security situation, the Grimes have had to relocate temporarily to Darwin, Australia. They continue to make trips to Timor to work with communities there and to bring teams of translators
to Darwin for training and translating. The innovative ways that the Grimes are motivating and mentoring local translators and partnering with local churches is stimulating similar approaches, not only in other parts of Indonesia but also around the Pacific and in Africa. Bethel Grove is Chuck’s home church, and both he and Barbara are members. In 1991 Chuck finished his PhD in linguistics, and in 1993 Barbara finished hers in anthropology—
both from the Australian National University.
